    Today in addition to the upstream passage, downstream passage would also need to be provided to avoid turbine mortality.  Extended rearing of juvenile salmon is carried out.  Smolts are released at the stage when they are almost ready to migrate to sea i.e. when they are about 2 years old.  Efforts against commercial fisheries especially in Canadian water and  in the West Greenland waters is necessary.
