To the Trustees of
The Grassroots Infrastructure Charitable Foundation

Invitation to attend
a potluck and discussion
about activating the foundation

6:00pm Sunday September 9, 2001
at 14 Laurel St, Cambridge
tel: 617-547-5033

The foundation has existed legally for almost two years, but only on paper. I hope the trustees, of whom I am not one, would see fit to establish a procedure so that the foundation can actually begin to receive and disperse funds on a regular basis, and become a so-called 'charitable' foundation with IRS 501(C)(3) status.

A few words of explanation. For many years I have supported various groups working for social change, most of them tax-exempt. I would like to continue such support. If the foundation becomes functional, I will make yearly contributions to it, which the foundation can then disburse.

What reasons are there for doing this now?
1) It will facilitate the foundation gaining tax-exempt status.
2) The foundation will gain experience regarding management of the property at 12-14 Laurel St prior to my death, after which it will have legal control. (I'll fill in with my thoughts on this at the gathering.)
3) It will gain experience, prior to my death, functioning as a legal, tax-exempt foundation.
4) A personal reason. It will relieve me of the considerable burden of making a substantial number of contributions. (That too, I'll explain at the gathering.)
