Professor George Salzman
Department of Physics

Dear George:

I have received your letter of September 22 providing me with details of the State law regarding salaries of retired individuals and expressing in writing concerns about your part-time salary that we discussed last summer. As I indicated when we talked in August, I have developed a salary structure for compensating part-time faculty based on the size and complexity of the courses that they teach. I have also established a policy of adding a fixed amount to the part-time rate for retired faculty members during their first two retirement years. Therefore, the salary arrived at in your case was based on the combination of these two policies, as I made clear to you when we met last August. You should not have been surprised by the rate of pay indicated on your appointment forms. Your calculations indicate that you could legally be paid more, but I do not use the maximum salary allowable by State law as a guide for setting salary rates.

You are, indeed, an engaged teacher who is deeply committed to your students and to the material you teach. I believe that is why you have decided to continue teaching after your retirement. I trust that at least this aspect of your post-retirement teaching experience continues to give you satisfaction.

Sincerely yours,
/s/Christine
