George Salzman
12-14 Laurel St Cambridge, MA 02139 Dear George, As you requested, I am enclosing for your information a copy of my policy (Sciences Unit of CAS) for compensating part-time faculty. This document includes the considerations used to arrive at the policy. The issues were discussed among the chairs before this policy was implemented. They are now made operative as part of the scheduling process each year. My policy viz a viz retired faculty is not written down. It was developed in response to the University retirement plan of 1994 that precluded post-retirement contracts. At that time, the dean of the Liberal Arts faculty and I developed a policy whereby we would allocate $4,500 for one course each semester for two years provided that course was needed and it counted as part of the departmental part-time allocation for the year. This sum was more than the current rate of part-time sections in Spring 1996. I modified that rate in your case to conform to the more recent guidelines for part-time compensation. Your compensation is in fact a generous interpretation of these guidelines. I hope that you will understand and accept my reasoning behind the part-time salary issue. Yours sincerely,
