Friends, It is impossible for me to keep up with local developments here and to get the information out to you in a timely fashion. Unfortunately the local daily newspaper Noticias does not maintain a website that is regularly either up to date or complete. Thus even readers of Spanish who go to the Noticias website, at http://www.noticias-oax.com.mx/index.php , can not be sure of being able to get current or past coverage of events reported in the printed edition.

As it happens, the website right now has two reports from this morning's issue which, if I have time, I will translate and post subsequently. They are

"¡No te muevas cabrón!", le gritaron
"¡No te muevas cabrón!".       A third report in today's paper on yesterday's actions is not on the Noticias website. To make it available in the same format as the item below, an e-mail, I would have to retype it and then translate it. The e-mail is posted on the Oaxaca Study-Action Discussion site at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/oaxacastudyactiongroup/message/2658 .

Friends,
I am removing OSAG from my e-mail distribution list to avoid posting items not immediately related to Oaxaca, as I was asked to do. If you wish to also get such mailings (for example the Zionist-orchestrated attempt to prevent open discussion of the Israel-Palestine conflict by getting Norman G. Finkelstein fired from De Paul University), please let me know and I'll add your name to my list. Thanks. George

Subject: Arrest of David Venegas, “El Alebrije” [alebrijes are carved and elaborately painted figurines, wooden figures of animals and imaginary creatures widely sold to tourists in Oaxaca, and exported. Made from the wood of copal trees, I’ve been told that the copal trees are threatened and artisans must go further and further up into the mountains to find remaining trees. For some reason, David Venegas has the unusual nickname El Alebrije.]

Please distribute [this message] and be attentive for the next actions
Oaxaca de Juárez, Oaxaca. 13 April 2007.
3:00 in the afternoon

[We demand] the immediate presentation, alive, of David Venegas Reyes, council member of the APPO, member of VOCAL and adherent of the Other Campaign

Today our companion David Venegas Cruz, “el Alebrije”, council member of the APPO (Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca) and member of VOCAL (Oaxacan Voices Constructing Autonomy and Liberty), was arrested.

He was arrested by agents of the Oaxaca State Ministerial Police at about 1:10 in the afternoon as he was walking in the Juárez park “Llano” towards the assembly of the State Council of APPO. Up to this moment he hasn’t been presented anywhere. The Ministerial Police authorities deny having arrested our companion in spite of the testimony of witnesses who were present at the event. We know nothing about his physical and emotional state.

Given the anticonstitutional practices of the police institutions, we are fearful for the life and the integrity of our companion David Venegas Cruz.

We denounce from this moment the failure of judicial agents for arresting our companion and we clarify that his only work has been participating in the legitimate social movement of the Oaxacan people, for which he doesn’t need to be accused of any crime that seeks to dirty his image as a social struggler.

In the face of these acts VOCAL will convoke mobilizations for the immediate liberation of our companion. These acts then are another demonstration of the political repression against the social movement of all the people of Oaxaca.

For any aggression against our companion we hold Mr. Daniel Camarena Flores responsible. Director of the Oaxaca State Ministerial Police, in 1977 while he was director of the Preventive Police he savagely repressed the student movement. Also Mr. Evencio Martinez Ramirez, today the State Attorney General who in 1998 served as president of the State Human Rights Commission, who, from that position, repressed the social movement in Oaxaca. Also Mr. Sergio Segrestes Ríos, Secretary of Public Security, who also fro his previous post as president of the State Human Rights Commission repressed the Oaxaca people. And finally Mr. Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, the illegitimate governor of Oaxaca State.

To the companions of The Other Campaign, the democratic Oaxacan teaching profession and the people of Oaxaca, we ask your solidarity in asking for the immediate liberty of our companion. We also ask for international solidarity to break the silence in the face of so much repression, for the people of Oaxaca and to gain the freedom of our companion.

EXIGIMOS

WE DEMAND
Immediate presentation of our companion David Venegas Reyes alive!
Respect for his physical and emotional integrity!
Immediate liberty for David Venegas Reyes and all political prisoners in Oaxaca!
