this page is at http://site.www.umb.edu/faculty/salzman_g/Strate/Commu/0.htm trans. by George Salzman <georgeisalzman@yahoo.com> The essays presented here are reflections worked out from different angles and perspectives, which focus on the necessity of systematizing regional knowledge. The importance of integrating this knowledge is that it can be used as reference material for the development of participatory projects that are designed for regional development and wellbeing. Read in an integrated way, these materials are offered to us as results of day-to-day research, of an intellectual activity committed to all aspects of community life. These are the reasons that motivate us to offer them as substantial materials for reflection on the pro-posal of indigenous peoples on matters of autonomy and self-determination, but above all for comprehending the life of indigenous communities and their model of internal socio-political organization; all this in a moment of great importance and transcendence characterized by profound ignorance that the society and the government have regarding the problems and form of indigenous life. These documents thus serve to illustrate the course of the Zapotec, Mixe and Chinanteco peoples in their struggle for more just, more dignified conditions of life. Jaime Martínez Luna
