The Boston campus of the University of Massachusetts is located at Columbia Point. Like many other areas of Boston, much of the land at Columbia Point was made by filling tidal flats. The following presentation explains how Columbia Point was filled. It is based on a lecture given at the university by Nancy S. Seasholes as part of Geography Awareness Week. The lecture was sponsored by the Earth and Geographic Sciences Club, Prof. Richard Gelpke, advisor, and is based on Dr. Seasholes' new book ("Gaining Ground") on Boston's landmaking published by MIT Press in 2003. The lecture was converted into this website with the assistance of The Learning Center, Samantha Linn, and the Web Services Department.
