area of Boston in 1630, when it was established by the Puritans, in dark
gray and the present land in light gray. The difference between the
two is land that was created by filling in the tidal flats--areas covered
with water at high tide but exposed mud flats at low tide--that once surrounded
Boston. The following presentation will explain why land was made
at Columbia Point (1), the location of the Boston campus of the University
of Massachusetts (UMass). |
