UMBHRWG'S TASK FORCE TO DEVELOP A

HUMAN RIGHTS INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The University of Massachusetts Human Rights Working Group (UMBHRWG) has formed a task force to develop a human rights internship program.  The internship program will enable students to receive academic credit for working under faculty supervision for human rights organizations such as Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.   Students majoring or minoring in human rights or earning a human rights certificate might be required or given the option to serve a one or two semester human rights internship.

CURRENT TASK FORCE MEMBERS

The UMBHRG's Internship Task Force consists of Eric Aronson (earonson@earthlink.net), Diane Dujon (diane.dujon@umb.edu), and Darren Kew (darren.kew@umb.edu).

TASK FORCE TASKS

The task force is developing a list of area human rights organizations which it will contact to determine whether they want to participate in an internship program with the UMBHRWG.  It also is addressing the question of how a student intern's work might be assessed and whether an intern might work for the UMBHRWG.

MODEL PROGRAMS

The Women Studies, Psychology and, Environmental Studies departments at UMB have internship programs which can serve as models for a human rights internship.  Furthermore, there are internship programs at other universities that might provide additional guidelines.
